Cakes and ale maugham7/6/2023 The narrative switches between the older Ashenden's cynical and witty musings on the London literary scene, and memories of his early life in Blackstable, a Kentish town where he originally encountered Driffield and his first wife Rosie Gann. The novel is written from the point of view of a middle-aged playwright, Willie Ashenden, who has been asked by Driffield's widow to supply his early memories of the author for inclusion in a sanitized biography. Hugh Walpole detected a cruel caricature of himself in the character of the meretricious author, Alroy Kear, and the superficially respectable Grand Old Man of English Letters, Edward Driffield, was commonly assumed to represent Thomas Hardy. Subtitled The Skeleton in the Cupboard, Maugham's novel raised contemporary ire for its satirical portraits. Angels and demons audio book7/6/2023 It has really been a while due to the fact that I saw the flick, nevertheless I presume that the movie script did not follow the Demons as carefully as the Da Vinci Code did and likewise there were some little differences with the characters, however the overall plot was the very same. I read this while on holiday and it was an excellent method to make a 4 hr airplane journey go rapidly. Nevertheless, nevermind, the length, it was a websites turner and likewise the short chapters did make it go quickly. I read this on my Kindle along with I was shocked by the range of stages – 137 – and websites numbers were not synced with the paper variation. Valdrada invisible cities7/5/2023 Italian author Italo Calvino (1923–1985) began his career as a writer of realistic stories, then developed an elaborate and intentionally disorienting manner of writing that borrows from canonical Western literature, from folklore, and from popular modern forms such as mystery novels and comic strips. As Kublai speculates, "perhaps this dialogue of ours is taking place between two beggars named Kublai Khan and Marco Polo as they sift through a rubbish heap, piling up rusted flotsam, scraps of cloth, wastepaper, while drunk on the few sips of bad wine, they see all the treasure of the East shine around them" (104). Calvino scholar Peter Washington maintains that "Invisible Cities" is "impossible to classify in formal terms." But the novel can be loosely described as an exploration-sometimes playful, sometimes melancholy-of the powers of the imagination, of the fate of human culture, and of the elusive nature of storytelling itself. And even though some of the cities that Polo evokes for the aging Kublai are futuristic communities or physical impossibilities, it is equally difficult to argue that "Invisible Cities" is a typical work of fantasy, science fiction, or even magical realism. Although Calvino uses historical personages for his main characters, this dreamlike novel does not really belong to the historical fiction genre. There might be an image of what a birder looks like in your mind. Either way, “bird” can definitely be a verb. Maybe so, though you can also be a very casual birder. Some people may claim birding to be a far more focused, serious task compared to bird-watching. If birding is defined as observing, listening, pursuing or admiring birds, watching them can certainly be part of how you bird - there’s just room for more than that if you so choose. What is the difference between birding and bird-watching? Let’s start with some tips to help beginners navigate the early stages of the hobby and, if you’d like, how to dive deeper into the world of birds. There are no qualifications, but birding can be a lot to take in at first for myriad reasons. Here’s the thing: You too can be that person if you’d like. I literally seek out birds in my spare time because they’re awesome and my favorite way to enjoy the outdoors. If it sounds like I’m complaining, I’m not. When the algorithms feed them bird-related content on social media, it gets forwarded to me. When they see a bird they don’t recognize, I’m asked to identify it with nothing more than a blurry photo. I’ve become The Bird Guy to my friends and family. If this sounds familiar, you’re not the first to note it. Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore - Ursula Le Guin's brilliant and magical trilogy. Regarding the story of Ged in A Wizard of Earthsea, Le Guin didn’t say that J.K. Rowling “ripped me off” in her Harry Potter series, but felt that Rowling should have been “ more gracious about her predecessors”. In the Earthsea series, we are introduced to the complex responsibilities of becoming an adult, and asked to consider the values of life and the nature of death. It’s heavy, but significant and humanly realistic reading for a teenager. Le Guin was fiercely protective and supportive of other authors. In 1973, she made a humorous critique of the problems faced by writers trying to make their worlds fantastical and strange in From Elfland to Poughkeepsie, encouraging and emphasising the importance of appropriate style. Style is something Le Guin seemed to be able to master effortlessly and consistently. I consider her short story Semley’s Necklace – first published in 1964 and later included in The Wind’s Twelve Quarters – to be the finest of its kind in fantasy writing, its crystalline prose equal to Semley’s tragic fate. It differs greatly to modern fantasy as it ‘tells’ much of the story rather than ‘showing’ it, but this is not a weakness of the novel. Le Guin maintained an interest in encouraging writers and sharing her art. I love classic fantasy for the simplicity. |
